Since the beginning of her writing career for Entertainment Weekly in 1998, Gillian Flynn has always wrote with the reader’s interest in mind. Before the publication of her first book, she was a movie writer in New York who traveled around the world from New Zealand for The Lord of the Rings or to Florida for Jackass: The movie. After ten years of this exciting career she began writing her first book Sharp Objects. Soon after this came her next two novels Dark Places and Gone Girl. All three of her books being highly successful she wrote one more short story which was published just last year. All of her books have either been made into a movie or have the movie rights sold. Now Gillian Flynn lives in Chicago with her Husband children and her black cat, we can hope she is working on her next novel however she is most likely playing Ms. Pacman in her basement with her kids.

Sharp Objects:
Since its release in 2006, Sharp Objects has gained lots of attention from critics and from us the readers. It was an Edgar Award finalist and received two British Dagger awards, the first book ever to win two Dagger awards in one year.
Camille Preaker a journalist who writes about the neglect of the human nature such as crime and murder returns home from the big city, after a struggle with not only her boss Curry, but her inner self. The case she is investigating is the death of two young girls. After gathering information, she reconnects with her mother Adora and half-sister. She soon finds out that her half-sister knew both of the girls and had more evolvement then she had originally expected. Camille however has secretes of her own and demons she cannot control, she cuts herself daily to express the pain her childhood caused her. With a dramatic twist at the end, sharp object takes you on a journey of a woman scarred with the pain of her past and the fear of her future.
Dark Objects:
With the high of her first novel still under her belt, Gillian Flynn released her second novel with high hopes for success. She was not disappointed when it made the New York Times Best Seller List and Best Book of 2009 in Today Magazine. In 2015 an adaptation of the book was released starring Charlize Theron and was just as thrilling as the novel.
Libby Day the sole survivor of the Kinnakee Kansas massacre. Being abandoned at a young, Libby grew up being the sorry cause of America. After watching her two sister and mother murder through satanic ritual she then testified against her teenage brother Ben. Now an adult Libby joins forces with The Murder Club to investigate who really killed her family before her brother is executed. With the narration spilt between Libby, Ben and Libby’s mother we learn about the life before and after Libby lost her entire family. This narration is in the form of flashbacks that Libby has during the course of the novel.

Gillian Flynns most famous novel, Gone Girl having spent one hundred weeks on The New York Times best seller list has become an international sensation and inspired multiply authors to write in the similar style. Having been named one of the best books of the year by People Magazine, Gillian Flynn struck it big with this work of literature. Since its release in 2012 it has been adapted into a movie staring Ben Affleck. This movie having special ties with southern Illinois created interest for us locals since it was filmed at Giant City State Park.
Gone Girl is a thrilling exciting novel with the plot as twisted as the characters in it. Nick and Amy Dunn where thought to be the perfect couple in southeast Missouri. When fives years of marriage had come upon them, Amy disappeared. Left to unravel the pieces of his wife’s disappearance, Nick struggles to solve the clues left by Amy herself. With narration given from both Nick and Amy we as the reader can see the lies that we are feed from both parties involved. With a climatic ending we discover what happen to Amy Dunn, and the future of the Dunn Family.
What does this mean for you the reader? \
Well the next time you go to Barnes and Nobel to buy a new book consider one of Gillian Flynn's many books. In my opinion they appear to the more modern reader. I say this because she includes mild vulgar language and sexual reference. I hope you take the time to read at least one of these and fall in love with her writing style.
